The project brings together the archive’s current custodians - archivists and curators from our institutional partners in Dundee, Edinburgh, and Budapest as a 'network of care' (Dekker, 2022) and artists connected to or interested in the Attic Archive. Through the shared endeavour of building the web platform, designed and developed by sound & infrastructure artist vo ezn, our aim is to extend access to the archive and provide a site for new work made to 'repurpose' rather than solely 'revive' vintage media artworks (Cramer, 2014) and thus reinvestigate their contemporary relevance for new audiences. Our research project also takes a post-digital approach to offline and online exhibition-making, supporting the artist's aim for the archive to ‘actively encourage and stimulate the making of new works’ (From A to A, 2010). We commissioned artists who either collaborated with Pete Horobin in the 1980s or contemporary artists who have never known about the archive to make work that reactivates the archive in the present. We believe that the themes of work present in the Attic are relevant to address in a post-digital context, such as multiple identities, networked and distributed cultural production, mental health in everyday life, the social, cultural, and economic roles of the artist and art, and outsideness, among others. We work through in-person and online network meetings, each hosted by a network partner, the first held in Dundee and Edinburgh in April 2024, the second in Budapest in October 2024, Dublin in April 2025 and finally the kaunch event once again in Budapest in May 2026. Each network meeting includes a public engagement event, which we titled under the umbrella of History/Reality to reference a work by Pete Horobin, and we invite expert consultants to these events to help us further our research.
